Charles Searle was headmaster of the National School in Bedford Street, he was well liked by pupils, parents and the wider community and a good artist. He formed an amateur operatic company and did most of the scenery and the training; he had a string band and NEWBY (as he was known) was pianist, part of the takings from performances went to church funds.
